There is a Tracy Flick (an excellent Reese Witherspoon) in every high school. You know, the one who wants to be the very best at everything. The one who is part of all the clubs. The one who wants to be in charge of everything all the time. Tracy is all of these things. Yep, you probably knew a person like this in high school.
The high school election for student body president is coming up and Tracy wants desperately to win. She's made dozens of posters, baked hundreds of cupcakes, and even made pins that say "Pick Flick", her catchy phrase. Enter Mr. McAllister (Matthew Broderick), a history teacher who has had it up to here with Tracy. He's the one person who doesn't want her to win. So, in order to thwart her plan of eventual takeover of the high school, Mr. "M" urges the captain of the football team (Chris Klein) to run for president. Klein had broken his leg and is out of sports, so why not give politics a try? And so, the race begins The first half of the movie is setting up the race, but the second half, for some odd reason, begins to focus on Broderick's problems. One of the main points in the film is the relationship between Broderick and his students, yet the director strays from that for a bit. The movie eventually shifts to Broderick's semi-affiar to his colleague's ex-wife. Does it have anything to do with anything? No, but the script is so strong that this minor break away doesn't affect the picture. Could you really have a 100 minute movie that solely concentrates on a simple high school election? No. ELECTION is one of those movies that aren't made too often. It's one that takes things to the limit and surprises you when you least expect it. I didn't go in expecting to be blown over by any scenes, but there were several that stood out. Most of the movie is narrated, which I'm not a huge fan of. But the script was funny, very funny, so I didn't mind. The movie is actually about the life of Broderick. The election is actually just a big subplot. Each of the main characters narrates a little at a time, telling us their ups and downs in life. Director Payne does a great job of putting this little movie together. It's not your average way of making a movie. He uses still shots that goes well with some of the narration, which in turn effectively helps tell a rather unusual story. ELECTION is a film that stands out. It definitely deserves its R rating. You wouldn't expect a movie about a high school election to be this racy, naughty, and heavily sex related. Expect it in ELECTION. High school was never so much fun. |
