Ashley Judd is wrongly accused of murdering her husband. When she finds out her conviction, she immediately realizes that she will be taken away from her young son. He happens to be the only thing she cares about, especially since it was her husband who set her up. The "surprise" is not surprising at all, since the movie's trailer tells you the husband is to blame. It's a shame too. If Paramount had kept some scenes out of the trailer, the movie would have been much better.
Before Judd is let loose on parole, an inmate, who seems to have been a former lawyer, tells Judd that she can kill her husband without any more harm. Since she's been convicted of killing him once, she can't be tried again. Now that doesn't mean that you can just go fill him full of lead in the middle of the street. It just means she can't be prosecuted for the same crime. There are many flaws in this movie. Tommy Lee Jones is one of them. He sleepwalks through another role. Will someone tell this guy to let another person chase the fugitive? It seems in his last few roles that he's always chasing something. Whether it is Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, aliens, or Judd. Another flaw is the movie's beginning. It is supposed to set up the things to come. Instead of letting us get a chance to get to know Judd, the movie speeds through the first 15 minutes without hitting the brakes. At one minute, we find Judd covered in blood. The next she's crying over her husband's disappearance. Then she's on the stand claiming "I didn't kill my husband!" What makes the movie worth the matinee price is Judd. She's believable in her unfortunate role. She won't stop until she gets her son. Aside from her looks, she isn't a bad actress. All she needs is to stay away from movies like these, and pick something else that has a little more energy. Given the large and surprising business of DOUBLE JEOPARDY, Ashley Judd can easily raise her asking price and not get one complaint. The woman has proven she can open a movie. KISS THE GIRLS sucked, but Judd's looks put it over the $50 million mark. She's not quite there on the buff and tough heroine scale, but she's getting close. Move over Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton, there's a new fighter in town. |
