What this movie brings most to the table is confusion. Apparently, a group of alien beings called "The Strangers" have brought numerous people to their so called "Dark City". It appears everyone in the city has been taken from Earth and brought to another destination in space. The city resembles New York. The Strangers have an ability to "re-arrange" things from people's personalities and memories to how the city looks each night. At 12:00 every night, the outer beings transform the city and change people's memories to something else. This is quite confusing.
Their intentions, from my perspective, seem to be that they are trying to learn more about humans in order to take over Earth. (???) Rufus Sewell plays one of the victims, but he is different from the other victims. He has the same powers as The Strangers and he must use them, eventually, to help restore the city back in good form. I try not to figure out the plot or even think about it. Doing that usually brings on a headache. Nonetheless, the special effects, which come at the end, are excellent. And the atmosphere is kind of cool as well, even if the plot is painfully difficult to figure out. This is a good movie because of its originality. Even so, I still have no idea why Roger Ebert picked Dark City for the best movie of 1998. |
