Dante's Peak (1997)
CAST: Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, Charles Hallahan
DIRECTOR: Roger Donaldson
MPAA RATING: PG-13
RUNNING TIME: 109 Minutes
STUDIO: Universal

Of the 2 disaster released in '97, DANTE'S PEAK is the one to see. The other was Fox's VOLCANO, which was released only 2 months after this movie. It was deemed the failure. PEAK is not near as dumb as its counterpart, but that's not to say it's the smartest action movie ever made.

The plot is simple. Brosnan is the scientist who believes that "Dante's Peak" is about to erupt and he's ready to put the town on alert. And naturally his boss doesn't believe it will erupt, thus leaving the town as it is. And of course, as the film moves along, Brosnan was right and before the town can evacuate, the volcano decides to do alittle evacuating of its own, courtesy of lava.

The script isn't actually Oscar-worthy, as you'll find yourself rolling your eyes after hearing some of the extremely clunky dialogue. Still, this movie's pacing is quick and the action is non-stop once the volcano erupts. The effects are pure eye-candy and you can't help but get caught up in all the suspense. Brosnan is clearly best at 007, but here he proves he can do other roles.
