Based on a true story, A CIVIL ACTION stars John Travolta, who plays a lawyer named Jan Schlichtmann. He's been asked by a small community to take on two chemical companies suspected of polluting their drinking water. The water is blamed for deaths of some of the neighborhood's children.
The best thing about A CIVIL ACTION is not the big preachy dramatic speeches that you find in every other courtroom movie, it's about the lead characters. Travolta and Robert Duvall, who plays one of the defense lawyers for the chemical companies, are excellent on screen. Travolta gives his character a little savvy. He doesn't have that stone look on his face that other lawyers have in other court movies. He has a personality that we find believable. Duvall is very smart in the film and very funny. William H. Macy is in charge of the funding for Travolta's team and is very funny as well. ACTION may not have the same glamour or suspense as other films like it, but what it is, is genuine. It's a film where you can't guess the ending after about 10 minutes of watching the film. It has a few twists to it. It's probably the one court case movie that actually is realistic. I mean, c'mon, would the events in A TIME TO KILL really happen? Doubtful. Would the events in A CIVIL ACTION ever happen? Yes, it's based on a true story |
