BOYS DON'T CRY is about as depressing a movie as you're ever going to find. It's the true tale about Brandon Teena (Teena Brandon), who is female, but lives her life as a male. She has, as she puts it, a "sexual identity crisis". Living all of her life in Lincoln, Nebraska, Brandon sets out on a journey to find true love. Along the way, she must hide her identity, and try to fit in, like one of the guys.

BOYS DON'T CRY is about being yourself, and about what it feels like to be different than everyone else. This movie's violence is startling to say the least. I would have enjoyed it less had it not been for the powerful performances by Oscar winner Swank and Oscar nominee Sevigny. Aside from those two's on screen chemistry, the rest of the film is simply about hanging out and having a good time, not something that appears to be very exciting.

There's just not much going on in this film. Aside from the lead performances, it's just not interesting to watch white, trailer trash rednecks drinking beers all day. There are no surprises, and definitely not any joy to be found. This film drags you down in the mud with it and never lets go. One viewing is enough for this story. It's hard to enjoy alot of this movie when you hate almost every character in it.
