THE BONE COLLECTOR borrows too much from other movies that you begin to try and figure out which ones they are instead of paying attention. It's easy to not pay attention to this drab and dull thriller.
Denzel Washington is a former cop who has been paralyzed. Angelina Jolie is a 1st year cop who stumbles on to some harsh evidence about a murder. The two eventually pair up and begin to figure out that this is the work of a serial killer. Washington's performance gives credibility to the movie. Thank goodness. Jolie sleepwalks through her role. Small pieces of evidence come in and the two begin to grow a friendship and try to stop the bad guy. Blah blah blah blah. You've seen this before and it's been done much better too. This movie is full of clichs. It borrows from THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, SEVEN, and even FALLEN. The ending causes the final bubble to burst because it stinks. Here's a curious question: do you really think the NYC police department would send a young cop, who has no experience in forensics, to do forensics? Not a chance. Second curious question: would the NYC police department, who has hundreds of specialists, really go to a paralyzed Washington for help? Doubtful. These are the kinds of inconsistencies that make this movie such a mess. THE BONE COLLECTOR tries and thinks that it is a pretty intense thriller. In actuality, the movie is looking to take the place of sleeping pills. |
