Martin Lawrence is a funny guy. He sometimes tries too hard to be funny. In Blue Streak, Lawrence has to try and be funny because the script that was written for him isn't. This movie is a cross between any Beverly Hills Cop flick and Rush Hour. It works better as an action movie than it does as a funny one.

Lawrence is a master jewel thief who is about to make off with a priceless diamond. Just before the cops nab him, he hides the diamond in a secret place. 2 years later, he gets out of prison to get the diamond. Little does he know that the secret place it was hidden is now a police station. So Lawrence must pretend to be a cop so he can get his prize.

This movie was a decent hit for Lawrence ($60 million). It would've probably made more money if it had been funnier. Lawrence didn't have an Eddie Murphy or a Will Smith to play off of this time. He just isn't strong enough to carry a movie by himself. He still hasn't reached that "Murphy" status. Luke Wilson plays the straight man as Lawrence's partner. He provides some comic relief, but his character is so underdeveloped that you'll forget he's in the film. If you're expecting action, you'll like the film. If you want comedy, you may want to rent Rush Hour instead.
