Best Laid Plans is a Gen-X version of The Usual Suspects. The difference between those to is this one has far fewer twists and turns. It doesn't have as many as the trailer may suggest. The movie is probably better enjoyed if you know nothing about the plot.

Aside from its too few twists, the film still has good things to offer, namely its characters. Josh Brolin is surprisingly good. He's a cowardly nervous wreck and it's hard to get behind this guy, even after you know what he's been dragged into. Witherspoon's character is far different from her Flick character in Election. You won't see a chirpy brat in this movie. Nivola is the lead character. He's best known as being Nic Cage's brother in Face/Off.

The story isn't as dark as it should be. Once the climax finally arrives, you'll feel deflated and a little bit cheated. It's antoher case where the story builds and builds, then your anticipation gets popped like a balloon, and all of your air flies out fast.
