I once read a critic's announcement that the Oscar season will kick off when Beloved opens. Well, the season has kicked off with a major disappointment. Hearing all the now overrated hype about this film, I found myself begging for something exciting to happen, but nothing really did. The movie had been pegged by Oprah as "her Schindler's List". I don't know which Schindler's List she was referring to, but this movie is no way on the same level as that film.

The thing that hurt this movie the most was there was no impact at all. There were a few revolting scenes, but aside from that, nothing special. Oprah's performance didn't amaze me in any way. What I saw from her was a talk show host who looked like she hasn't made a movie since 1985...what a coincidence? Any other black actress could have acted the same way with this part. Danny Glover's performance should be noted in this film. The best performance of all was Kimberly Elise as Denver, Oprah's other daughter. Showing her go from a frightened child to a more mature girl near the end of the film was a relief. Of course, we can't forget Newton's pitiful performance as the long lost Beloved. Gimme a break. She was just plain awful. Do your snarling somewhere's else.

The plot may be the most disturbing of all. It's mixed up with flashbacks of horrid experiences, good experiences, and a ghost. That's right, this movie has ghosts in it. Simply put, this is a 3 hour trainreck. And when you wake up in the morning with a headache, you know what to blame. This is about as shallow and demeaning as a movie can get. Yet another overhyped "saga" that fails to live up to expectations.
