Southern preacher Sonny Dewey (Robert Duvall) has to flee from his church and
community after he kills his wifes lover. Dewey stumbles along to another
community where he decides to build up another church and gradually gathers a high
amount of followers to join.
Duvall wrote, produced, and directed this small film. He did an outstanding job and gave maybe the best performance of the year in 1997. His work was honored with an Oscar nomination. Financed by Duvall for $5 million, The Apostle revolves around a subject that Hollywood doesnt make too many pictures about. The movie has some nice supporting characters, but its Duvalls demeanor and determination of his character that makes this film one of the best of 1997. I have never seen another actor put as much into a film and controlled it with such hard work as Duvall did. |
