ANNA AND THE KING has been told several times, but mostly through dreaded musicals. This time, it is a live version that features one of the best actresses of all-time, Jodie Foster. Foster is back on screen again as she plays a schoolteacher, who has been summoned to Siam to help teach the King's son.

After Foster arrives, she feels out of place and does not adjust to the ways of the Siamese. She and the King, played very well by Chow Yun-Fat, don't quite mesh when they first meet, but begin to build a relationship as the movie presses on. She begins to grow attached to Siam and begins to fall for the King.

This movie has some of the best sets I've ever seen on film. The cinematography is beautiful and the performances are terrific. The thing that impressed me the most was the script. It's well written and has a nice amount of wit in it. The drawback to the movie is the length. It's listed at about 148 minutes, but it feels like 248. I was also surprised by the violence in the picture. There is a be-heading that is dreadful to watch.

In all, the movie is good. The lead actors are strong, but the best thing is the scenery itself. There are shots in the movie that belong in the National Geographic.
