| Steven Spielberg usually captures the audience with his brilliant work in his movies. The magic isn't here in this tale about slavery. The plot is about whether or not passengers from "La Amistad" are free blacks or slaves. There were only 1 or 2 highlights from the film. One being how the slaves were treated on "La Amistad", a brutal and harsh depiction. The other was the powerful performance by Djimon Hounsou, who plays one of the Africans. His strong voice and manner is the only good acting found here. Even Hopkins, great in most cases, can't help out too much. I didn't see anything special in his performance, or Freeman's for that matter. Finding out the terrible truth of slavery is better to be read in a history book than looking for it in this film, it's just not there. |
