AMERICAN PIE is the story of 4 high school seniors who make a pact to lose their virginity before they graduate. They try and help each other hook up for the prom, which is the day they must score. Filled with a few sight gags and some very raunchy humor, PIE is more along the lines of ELECTION instead of the gag-filled THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY.
The think I liked the most about the movie is it didn't have to rely solely on visuals to get its jokes across. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and almost every Adam Sandler movie must rely on those gags in order to make the audience laugh. This yummy teen comedy actually used the cast for the punch line. Now, there were a couple of gags in the movie, one of which was very nasty, but for the most part, it was just straight normal comedy. Another thing about the movie is that the teenagers seem like teenagers. They're not dominating adults that you find in other movies, they actually act 17. It's easy to tell that most of the cast is above 17, but they're not perceived as adults. The teens in this film are represented differently that the ones you'll find in a movie like CRUEL INTENTIONS, where the teens are adults. AMERICAN PIE, which looks to have taken a page or two out of ANIMAL HOUSE, will be this year's MARY film, even though they're not too similar. The really good teen comedies are the PIE and ELECTION, not the SHE'S ALL THAT and NEVER BEEN KISSED. Those films all followed the same formula with all the stereotypes, etc. AMERICAN PIE was something different. This should be the dessert after every meal. |
