Film
As with any 007 outing, you'll find plenty of the spiffy
one-liners. I counted about 4 that were downright hysterical.
Brosnan, thankfully, has put the charm back in Bond. He and
Sean Connery are clearly the top Bonds. Dalton was the replacement for Brosnan in the late 80s when Brosnan was tied up in contractual agreements. And Roger Moore, who was pretty good in his early films, eventually began to age along with the series.
In all, this Bond has something for everyone. And the story
is actually pretty easy to follow this time. The Bond
Franchise is the longest running in history. With movies like
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, don't expect to see 007
retire any time soon. One of the better entries.
Features
These second wave Bond titles don't have as much in features as the first set. Still, there are 2 commentaries to be found on this dvd. The other highlight in the extras is the "documentary". I put quotes around that because it's only 15 minutes. In my mind, documentaries need to be about 25 minutes or more in length. Anything less than that is still a "featurette". This one isn't all that impressive.
It's pretty fluffy, with alot of shots from the film. And it features very unexciting interview clips from the cast. And man, that host is terrible. I don't know what rock she crawled out of, but I don't believe for a second that she has ever seen a Bond film. The reason is her interaction with the cast. They, especially Brosnan, look very uncomfortable, as they seem to know this lady isn't too bright in her Bond knowledge.
As with any Bond film, the menus on this dvd are spectacular. There aren't any TV spots, which I was kinda disappointed by. Still, there's enough material here to keep you occupied.
Audio
Ah yes, the sound. It comes as no surprise that this is the best sounding Bond dvd. The 5.1 track is extremely aggressive, all the way from the score to the action. This Brosnan outting features more explosions than his other movies, so there's alot of work for the sub-woofer. The bass will leave your head ringing for a few hours. The surrounds are not quite as good as the front channels, but they work well, especially in the "pipeline sequence". The boat chase at the beginning has demo written all over it.
Video
Ah yes, the picture. It comes as no surprise that this is the best looking Bond dvd. Am I repeating myself? Since MGM seems to be the last studio to understand that anamorphic is better, thank goodness they give their Bond films, the studios bread and butter, great 16x9 transfers. This picture is crisp, the colors are strong, and there is no dust on the print. Zero edge-enhancement and no pixels. This dvd shows you what MGM can do when they don't get lazy. Let's hope they give the same audio/video treatment to their non-Bond titles.
Overall
The movie itself is enough for a recommendation. This is simply one of the better 007 outings, and it's Brosnan's best yet. The audio and video are as good as they come and there are plenty of features, even if they're less than what the first wave received. If you want a dvd that has the entire package, go pick up THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.
