Movie
This movie is as cliched as they come, and you know how it's all going to end. 1997 was the year of volcanic disaster movies, as this one, along with DANTE'S PEAK, both opened. VOLCANO had the unfortunate task of following up on DANTE'S PEAK decent box office by being released only 2 months after its run. And when it was released, it sunk faster than the lava soaked vehicles in the film. There's alot of stupidity here, but the effects are quite impressive and there really isn't a dull moment. So there are a few positives, even though there are more negatives.

Disc
The best feature on here are the very cool looking menus. Fox usually puts more effort in those than they do on anything else. And these menus are loud! As far as "real" features go, there is the ever-important trailer and some cast bios. Yep, Fox broke all the rules and included bios. I'm so proud. This was one of Fox's titles to be released before they began supporting 16x9 enhancement. Still, this transfer is great looking. There aren't any pixels to be found and the print is as new looking as they get. One of the better non-anamorphic transfers available. Even more impressive is the extremely aggressive audio. If you want to work your sub-woofer overtime, put this disc in. There's a constant flow of bass, with awesome surround effects. As far as audio goes, this dvd is one of the best.

Overall
Dumb is being gentle when describing VOLCANO. It's still passable entertainment because of the cast and the effects. If you're looking for something to give your system a workout, by all means buy this. Otherwise, a rental should be enough.
