Film
Thunderstorms and snowstorms are bad, but tornadoes...well, they're really bad. Not only are tornadoes extremely violent, but the ability to know how one operates is almost a complete mystery. Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton have built a machine that they believe will change that mystery. With it, they hope to develop an advanced warning system, which will give people more than 3 minutes to prepare for the disasterious whirlwinds.
The special effects are the star of the film. The tornadoes are life-like, as is the destruction they cause. From the flying cow, to the 15,000-pound gasoline tanker, TWISTER puts the action in-your-face.
The acting is barely average, but we're not looking for that in a summer blockbuster. We want excitement, and that's what we get in this truly awesome movie. A fun-filled adventure with spectacular special effects.
Features
There's not much in terms of extras. Brief cast & crew bios and the teaser trailer is all you'll find. Blasting your ear drums is the most important thing on this disc. Production notes are supposed to be on this dvd, but I found zero.
Audio
The sound is full force. All channels are pushed to the limit. The bass rumbles and hums throughout the picture, while the surround effects tap you on the shoulder during the twister shots. This is demo all the way. About the only other dvd that has better sound is SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The sound on this dvd is one of the few that makes you feel as though you're in the theater, instead of at home. For a great audio workout, let your system do the twist.
Video
This 16x9 transfer is just great. Matching the audio, the picture is grain free. Most of the film is gray and dark, but that doesn't take away from the quality. The colors are strong when they're used, and the darkness is deep, but easily seen. One of the early releases still holds its own against the newer dvds.
Overall
Great popcorn movie with alot to look at. It's dumb, but if you suspend disbelief (you do for most blockbusters), there's alot of enjoyment. This bare-bones release is being discontinued in favor of the DTS version which has a few more features. This version lacks the features, but the audio (at least Dolby Digital) and video are exactly the same.
