TOP GUN was the biggest hit of 1986 grossing over $150 million. With a combination of intense jet sequences, a booming soundtrack, and a love story, it's hard not to believe audiences didn't flock to see this. Though the scenes with Cruise and McGillis drag down the film's energy, you won't mind with Scott's neck-breaking pace. Those aerial shots of the jets are just awesome. The soundtrack has some classic 80s tunes, such as 'Danger Zone', which played throughout the film. Cliched story, but still fun.

Features
This was a very early Paramount release. It has nothing on it that you would call features.

Audio
A 5.1 mix that sounds really good. The jets whisking by will provide the rear channels with some action, while the takeoffs offer some heavy bass. The sound is clearly the best part about this dvd.

Video
An early release that didn't get a 16x9 transfer. For a film made about 15 years ago, the print holds up very well. There are some grain, which is expected, and a few blips, but most of the movie is easily watchable. The picture is soft at times, and would have benefited by the anamorphic transfer. The disc does offer both widescreen and pan & scan.

Overall
This is easily one of the most popular films of all time. Unless you have to hear this movie in 5.1 or watch it in widescreen, I would just tape it when it plays on TBS, which seems to be all the time.
