Movie
4 soldiers come across a map that will lead them to a hidden bunker full of Sadaam Hussein's gold. They find the map in the oddest of places. It belonged to a wounded soldier's butt. The dark humor that you see in the movie's trailer stays around until the soldiers find the gold. After that, it seems to disappear. The movie takes a very swift turn. The mood changes to depression. Because that's when the focus shifts away from the gold and towards the pitiful refugees who were caught up in Desert Storm.

The movie draws you in with the gold factor, then captures you like a refugee with its harrowing mood change. There are many moments worth noting in the movie, maybe too many. The scene that has been getting most of the attention shows a bullet going through a soldier, literally. On the big screen, we see the insides of a then wounded soldier. It's quite a moving shot.

Disc
THE MATRIX may be Warner's most popular dvd, but THREE KINGS is their best. There's enough features here to keep you occupied for hours. The 21-minute documentary is nice, but the director's "video journal" is by far the best piece off this disc. There are also a few hidden bunkers which contain some secrets. And then there are 2 commentary tracks, with one featuring director Russell. This guy is funny and he's easy to listen to. I wished Spike Jonze was on it though. The video transfer is simply perfect. The colors are muted early on, which is done intentionally, much like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. This flawless transfer may be Warner's best so far. The sound of the dvd is also first-rate. Your speakers will do a little double time, as the movie's soundtrack is just as booming as the action scenes. This dvd is of reference material for features, audio, and video.

Overall
I have a feeling this will be a popular movie on home video. It only grossed about $60 million, which is surely lower than what the boys at WB were expecting. It's a great film, and the dvd is even better. When you combine all this greatness, what you have is a dvd worth the price of gold. Okay, not really, but still...
