Movie
THE THIN RED LINE takes a poetic look at war, rather than the gritty painful vision that Steven Spielberg had of his masterful SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The film is good, but it's not great. Standout performances come from Nick Nolte and Elias Koteas. The war scenes are excellent and the cinematography is superb, yet there is too much artistic poetry for my taste.
Disc
No animated menus, no features worth noting...yep, I'd say this is a Fox disc. There's not even a trailer. Thank goodness the audio and video are awesome. I am really surprised by the audio on this disc. SPR is the demo material of the two, but the sound here is rock solid. You'll hear every bullet being shot. And the waves from the ocean put you on the ship with the soldiers. The video is, shock shock, anamorphic, and it is one of the best looking dvds ever released. It really stands out when you get the beautiful shots of the jungle.
Overall
Hey, this isn't the best war movie, but it did manage 7 Oscar nominations. It's a good war movie that may have too much artistic feel for the general audience. If you don't like a scene, all you have to do is push the skip button.
