"Supernova" is one of the best looking Sci-fi B-movies I have ever seen. The $60 million that the film cost sure didn't go to waste in the effects department. Too bad no money was spent on a script or characters.

It's surprising this film even got released. I'm guessing it was probably completed in early 1999 (wasn't released until January 2000). "Supernova" also went through a few directors, and even Francis Ford Coppola stepped into the editing room to try and make the film watchable. Did he succeed? Well, let's just say the film isn't total crap.

Features
This gets a little more than what MGM usually gives their releases. This version of the film is Rated-R (the theatrical release was PG-13). The meat of the package is the 20 minutes worth of deleted scenes. They're not in the greatest of quality, but they're interesting to watch, at least once.

Audio
A very active 5.1 track. The surrounds are used very effectively. I'd have to say that sci-fi films make the best use of surrounds, simply because of all the passing ships in space, etc. This movie really sounds great.

Video
The video mirrors the audio. It's a great looking 16x9 transfer. Looks like, for now, MGM is only giving their new releases these great transfers. Colors are rock solid, blacks are deep, and there are no pixels to speak of. And those effects simply look amazing. Great use of color.

Overall
If only the movie was good. The sound and picture are as good as they come, and there are a few decent extras on here. But the film is just way too bad to recommend. Rent it, and if you like it, I still wouldn't buy it.
