Movie
The effects are sensational and the plot, though complex, is very intriguing. The Borg offer a presence similar to Khan's in The Wrath of Khan. Though I would have liked more screen time for them, the Borg are clearly the best villians of the Next Generation series. Second best effort in the long series.
Disc
Paramount has given First Contact a brand new anamorphic transfer. The results are breathtaking. This is one of the best picture transfer's I have ever seen. The shots of outer space are simply amazing. No dust, pixelation, or scratches are found. The blacks are deep and the colors are vibrant, with no fading whatsoever. This is the best looking TREK dvd, just edging out Insurrection. The audio is equally strong. Though the bass is a tad below Insurrection's offering, the audio in general is excellent. Your surround speakers will catch every ship passing by. The laser firings and explosions rock the room. Okay, so Paramount didn't put crap on this disc as far as extras go. 2 trailers is all you get. Of course, these are 2 awesome trailers, so I'll give them a 1/2 point. As far as sound and picture go, this is reference quality. Have this disc in when a friend stops by and says "what's so great about dvd?"
Overall
What an easy recommendation. This dvd has one of the best transfers ever for a dvd. The audio is up to the task. And did I mention that the movie is very good?
