Billy Bob Thornton won an Oscar for writing this marvelous story of a mentally retarded man who's finally been released from a mental institute. He returns to his home town after 25 years and tries to fit in. This was Thornton's starting point of his career and is his most unforgettable character

Maybe the movie's best asset is the performance of Dwight Yoakam. His character, Doyle, is one mean S.O.B. Just goes to show you that even a country singer can give a great performacne. The ending is powerful, yet maybe a little shocking.

Features
A very early release for Disney. Which means no features of any kind.

Audio
The audio is in 2.0 surround and that does the film justice. This is a quiet, talky character study and there isn't any need for loud sounds.

Video
This non-anamorphic transfer has a few blips and pixels. This format is still the best way for this film to be seen. There's not much use for color in the movie, so black is about as colorful as it gets. It's mostly a faded mix with muted, dried-out colors.

Overall
Definitely one of the better films of the '90s. You don't need alot of features for a movie like this. Buy it, and enjoy a great film from Billy Bob Thornton. Uh-huh.
