Movie
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was the best movie of 1998. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was the second best movie of 1998. This movie is the perfect romantic comedy. Everything about the film is excellent. This movie benefits the most by the fine performances of Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, and Geoffrey Rush. The very powerful script takes charge the second the film begins. It is precisely written. The comedy in the movie brings it into a whole new dimension. It surprisingly had numerous parts of comedy. Director John Madden brings all of these things together with great passion.

Disc
Miramax took alot of heat over this release. Not because it didn't live up to expectations, but because of the way it was released. Way back when, Miramax first announced this title as the Collector's Series. Yet, later, they canceled it in favor of a bare-bones release. And, of course, as the many dvd fans gobbled up the Best Picture's standard release, Miramax decides to announce that a Collector's Series is coming. The reasoning behind this is simply $$$. They knew what they were doing. Make us by the standard disc, then announce the special edition. But that's the old Disney...

As far as the features go, this one is jam packed. Not one, but two commentaries are found. And both are entertaining. There's also a nice 25-minute featurette on the film and deleted scenes. In all, this is probably the best overall Disney release. And what not, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE did win Best Picture, even though SAVING PRIVATE RYAN should have. The standard release was Disney's first anamorphic transfer. This one has the same transfer. All gorgeous in its glory. It still remains one of the best looking movies ever released on the format. Being dialogue heavy, there isn't much in the way of audio. Everything is crystal clear and the terrific score is well recorded. As a whole, this is easily one of the best packages ever.

Overall
I couldn't recommend this more. Every film lover probably has it by now, but if you happened to just now crawl out from under your rock, I suggest you get this baby. All Best Picture winners should be treated as well as this one.
