Of all the military courtroom dramas, "A Few Good Men" ranks the highest. "Rules of Engagement" tries to be like the former, but ultimately comes up very short. Featuring more action and less drama, "Rules" can't make up its mind on whether or not it wants to be a war movie, or a courtoom battle.

The combat scenes, though choppy, provides the spark in the film. They'r pretty realistic, although they're too bloody. Steven Spielberg showed the gore in "Saving Private Ryan" because he needed too; Friedkin does it because he wants too.

The courtroom scenes just feel hollow, like they've left out a big chunk of information. All the feeling you'll get from this is Jones and Pearce casually looking interested in what they have to say.

It's these types of flaws that make this movie only above average, instead of good.

Features
I remember the days when Paramount would give us only a trailer on ALL of their titles. They're still stingy sometimes, but their new, bigger titles seem to get some decent treatment. This disc is no exception. You get a commentary by Friedkin, and a nice 23-minute featurette. Cast & Crew rounds out the package. Ironically, there is no trailer!

Audio
Whoa! You probably wouldn't expect such an agressive mix on a dvd, but this one rocks the house. The combat scenes really take advantage of the surround sounds. You will hear every single gunshot and flicker. The bass takes a backseat to the rear channels this time. If you want to show your friends a dvd that has great sound in the back, pop this baby in. Reference.

Video
The video is strong, but it has 1 tiny flaw. On my disc, at 0:13:05, the picture bounces up and down for a few seconds. I don't know if this is a faulty disc, but I've played this scene over and over and the same thing happens. Very minor complaint, however. The rest is very watchable.

Overall
Better than I expected, but I'd play it safe and rent it first, unless you can find a really good deal online.
