Movie
The Mummy did two things this past summer season. 1, it unofficially kicked off the blockbuster season. I didn't watch many movies from January to April. Why? Because that's when the crap is released...you know, the movies that have been delayed or pushed back because the studio knew they wouldn't do so hot. Anyways, the second thing it did was bring Universal out of hot water. They had released so many bombs in 1998 (Babe 2, Meet Joe Black, etc.) that many felt they might be out of the movie business. This blockbuster grossed a cool $155 million and put Universal out of trouble and back on the map as a major player. Because of The Mummy's success, Universal is going through their vault to update their other classic monsters. Yes!!!
Disc
I love Universal's Collector's Edition discs. I just flat out love them. Almost as much as New Line's Platinum Series. The Mummy deserved this kind of treatment. From the animated menus to the enormous amount of features, this disc has it all. I love the menu screens. Universal has put Egyptian writing in place of English for each menu selection. Don't worry, when you select an option, it changes to English. A little tiny microscopic idea that is just really neat. There are only 3 deleted scenes, but one of them should have been in the movie. The documentary is very educational because it is basically a doc. about the effects. They go in detail, and I mean great detail, showing you how the mummy was created. Egytology 101 is educational for those who want to know more about it. The video transfer is among the very best. Beautiful colors, no artifacts, perfect. It shows what anamorphic can do for your film. The audio is demo material. With most of the action taking place in the desert, you'll hear every grain of sand flowing. The mummy's voice is very loud and the front speakers will cover that. All the explosions throttle the room. In all, just flat good stuff.
Overall
This is a big popcorn movie that requires no thinking at all. It's not near as dumb as Armageddon. It does actually make some sense. With those effects and features, do I really need to have to recommend it?
