Movie
This story is very simple, yet it still feels fresh with each viewing. Hackman is sensational as the coach, giving a real, edgy performance. Dennis Hopper, who is a drunken father to one of the players, is great. His performance netted him a well-deserved Oscar nomination. This movie differs from other sports films because of the characters. They're easy to like and quickly begin to root for them. They appear real and not just some stereotype that we've seen in other films.

Disc
I'm glad MGM has re-released this previously out-of-print title. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to do an anamorphic transfer on this one either. Still, the video looks pretty good for a film made 14 years ago. There are occasional spots and the picture gets soft every now and then, but it still looks better than vhs. The audio is much better, however. Goldsmith's score has never sounded better and the crowd cheers and dialogue are easily heard. The trailer is the dvd's only feature.

Overall
Many people will jump at the chance to get this dvd. More features and 16x9 transfer would've been nice, but fans of the film won't care. MGM may have been lazy by not giving this better treatment, but at least they did re-release it. Highly recommended.
