Film
This movie has so much emotion driving through it. Some
have complained that the movie is too long. They are partly
right. It could have been trimmed down 20 minutes, but every
movie can be edited more. The pacing is excellent, the
direction is sharp, and the cast is truly outstanding.
THE GREEN MILE is one of the best movies of the year. It
has a few flaws in it. The length is a tad too long and
sometimes it seems as though the prison has a motel-type
feel to it. It's too comfortable at times.
Features
Most reviews of this dvd claim that there aren't many features because of the movie's length (3 hrs.). True, the movie took up most of the dual-layered disc's space, but Warner Bros. could have easily made this into a 2-disc set. I mean, this was their big Oscar movie. Fox has been releasing 2-disc sets for about a year now and continue to do so, and New Line will with "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights". So why couldn't Warner with this movie?
The dvd includes a 10-minute featurette that is labeled "Documentary" on the packaging. Whatever. It does have some short clips from the cast & crew and Stephen King. The fluff level is much lower than your standard fare. Also are the powerful trailer and some selected cast & crew bios.
Audio
One of this movie's 4 Oscar nominations was for Best Sound. Do you think this dvd has good audio? Of course it does. The bass is thunderous during the electric chair scenes and the movie's elegant score never sounded better. This dialogue-driven movie can be heard over all the roaring bass. A clean, crisp 5.1 mix.
Video
Outstanding. These new films that are coming to dvd have such great prints that it's hard to find any flaws. This has bits of grain, which is natural, but nothing else. It's a dark, moody film and the colors show it. Image is solid, and the sharpness is excellent.
Overall
This is the 3rd Best Picture movie to now arrive on dvd. It's an easy recommendation just for the story alone. It's a little too long, but the movie's emotion and impact deserves to be seen again, even if it is on your television. Highly recommended.
