Movie
You know how its all going to turn out, but this is still a fun adventure. The cast especially helps out. While Allen is pretty good at his deliberate overacting, al la Captain Kirk, its Rockwell, Weaver, and Rickman who steal the show. Not only is the cast good, but there is quite a bit of action and some terrific special effects, courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic. The movie's message is cliched, but the idea is still original. And you don't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy the movie either.
Disc
For the audio and video, it's a much different story. The video is a great anamorphic transfer. This is a very colorful movie and the disc brings out strong blacks, with rich colors. There were only a few small moments of any specks. The audio track is fairly aggressive. The sub-woofer will dish out a bit of bass and since this is an outerspace movie, the surrounds are active. Especially when the ships fly around, very cool sounds. Once again, DreamWorks proves they belong in the same sentence as Universal, Columbia, and New Line.
