This all makes for a very interesting movie. The film is not without its flaws. The length is way too long. The director, Sydney Pollack, has never been accused of a great editor. There are plenty of drab scenes that should have been cut to shreds. Still, there's plenty of redeeming qualities. The performances are great, with Cruise, Hackman, and Brimley being the highlights. And those last 25 minutes are down right nerve-racking.

The movie was based on the popular John Grisham novel. It sticks to the book's story until the end. THE FIRM was the third highest grossing movie of 1993 with over $154 million. Flawed, but still enjoyable.

Features
The movie's theatrical and teaser trailer are the only features.

Audio
Very subtle, but crystal clear. This newly remastered track has no use for bass or surrounds. It's all about the dialogue, baby. There's an occasion of rear channel use, but most of the movie is front ended.

Video
Paramount has got to be the best studio when it comes to picture quality. Gripe all you want about their lack of special edition content, the video and audio are the most important things about dvd. This new 16x9 transfer is almost perfect. There may be a scene or two with some grain, but the rest of the picture is stunning. Strong blacks and lively colors are impressive throughout. Did I mention that Paramount is the best studio when it comes to picture and sound quality? I thought so.

Overall
I'd recommend a rental first. The 154 minutes crawls by at times. But if you're a Cruise fan, you've probably bought it already.
