Film
ENTRAPMENT was a pleasant surprise. I thought it was going to be another run-of-the-mill thriller. Instead, it's a very smart ride in the art of stealing. It's not often that you root for the bad guys, but anytime you're dealing with mega-stars Connery and Zeta-Jones, you can't help yourself.
Features
This new special edition is far superior to the standard release that is now discontinued. Fox went back and put a number of features on one of their surprise hits of 1999. The 13 minute featurette is nothing to jump up and down about, but it is a little more meaty than the usual 5 minute ones they throw at us. Commentary and some deleted scenes round out the package.
Audio
This is the exact same 5.1 mix used on the last release. Though it's not a powerful track, it still gets the job done. This is more of a mystery suspense film than an action packed adventure, which the trailer suggests. You can hear every little sound and whisper easily. A steady audio mix.
Video
This is where things get good. The last release, which was non-anamorphic, looked very good. This 16x9 transfer looks even better. There's more detail, and the color and sharpness are improved.
Overall
Fox used to be the punchline for many dvd jokes, but now that they've fully supported 16x9, they are near the front as far as dvd producing goes. Let's hope they go back and give special edition treatment to some of their previously movie-only editions, like say, the DIE HARD TRILOGY.
