Movie
FRANKENSTEIN may get all the praise, but it was DRACULA that started the Universal Monster craze. Everyone knows the story of the Count. He seeks out new blood in England, where he begins his terror. And anyone bitten by the vampire will come under his influence. There have been tons of Dracula films, but none of them are as remembered as much as the Lugosi one. It may not be fast-moving, but it is probably the most classiest production of the Count.

Disc
DRACULA, the first Universal Monster released, was the last dvd of the first-wave. The features on this one aren't as plentiful as FRANKENSTEIN, but it does have an added bonus. Aside from the text features, the film has a documentary and audio commentary. The documentary is fairly entertaining, as it moves from one vampire story to the next before finally talking about the Lugosi one. This is the only monster release not to feature any animated menus or music. This could be due to the fact that it has more than one film on it. The added bonus of this dvd is the inclusion of the Spanish version, which was filmed at the same time as the Lugosi version. Also included is a brand new score for the film, so in all there are three separate versions of this film, very impressive.

What's not so impressive is the transfer. Granted, this was made in 1930, but still, this video looks very bad. The blotches and blips don't let up once. FRANKENSTEIN, which was made only a few years after this movie, looks much better. Universal could have worked on a little more of the restoration. The audio is another story. In fact, I think it's the best sounding of the monster releases. The score is pretty solid, and the dialogue still sounds very clear.

Overall
The horror buffs has this already, and most people have seen the film. I'd recommend it on the overall presentation of the dvd, but the film, though popular, won't exactly thrill you.
