Film
In all, this film is not something you brag about, but it has
just enough good material to make it worth watching. If you
can wait 2 hours before the effects take over, you'll be
pleased. The effects are very good and they work well in the
grand finale. Something you may not have known: Steven
Spielberg was the executive producer for this film. Grossed a hefty $350+ million worldwide.
Features
Paramount hasn't been much of a studio that cared about features, at least not until 2000. They did manage to stick 2 trailers on this release.
Audio
The prize of the dvd. Paramount has always been strong in the technical departments. Here, they show you how to mix a movie. The bass just conquers everything. Though this is more dramatic than the overly-dramatic ARMAGEDDON, the bass steps up to the plate when called upon. The surrounds are quite active as well.
Video
It's not a 16x9 transfer, but it still looks great. Broad coloring combined with deep darks make this an almost flawless transfer. There's a bit of grain, but that's about it as far as print problems go. Another prisitne transfer from Paramount, minus anamorphic.
Overall
No one will accuse this of being great cinema, but at least DEEP IMPACT tries to make sense. It's also fairly believable, at least for Summer fare. Buy it for the system, but I'd rent if you just want to see the movie.
