Movie
The script isn't actually Oscar-worthy, as you'll find yourself rolling your eyes after hearing some of the extremely clunky dialogue. Still, this movie's pacing is quick and the action is non-stop once the volcano erupts. The effects are pure eye-candy and you can't help but get caught up in all the suspense. Brosnan is clearly best at 007, but here he proves he can do other roles.

DANTE'S PEAK was one of Universal's early C.E.'s and it's still one of their better efforts. Gone are those long documentaries that they included on their C.E.'s, as most of the big releases now have the "Spotlight on Location" featurettes, which only last about 25 minutes. This dvd has an hour documentary. If you want to know anything about the film, this documentary will tell you. My favorite part of it was when they showed how they did some of the effects. Very cool stuff. Also included is an audio commentary by the director. Aside from those 2 features, the rest is standard, although a commentary and a big documentary is plenty. I'd rather have those instead of deleted scenes or outtakes.

Since this is a disaster movie, you expect to have good audio. Wrong, this movie has excellent audio. In fact, it's one of the most aggressive mixes I've heard. The bass is very, very deep and loud. And this was before the volcano erupted. Surrounds are good, but the prize is clearly up front. This mix will impress your friends and annoy your neighbors. For the video, Universal has given this baby a brand new-anamorphic transfer. It looks terrific, as there are only a couple of instances where there are any grain. I'm glad this got the 16x9 treatment, because many of the early C.E.'s, such as TREMORS and THE THING, didn't. In all, an excellent dvd, in terms of both technical and features.

Overall
I enjoyed this movie in the theater and better at home. It's kind of silly, but most Hollywood action films are. If you can find it, go pick it up. It's fun, and has great features and a very impressive audio mix.
