Frank Oz is behind the camera in BOWFINGER. He keeps the pacing pretty good, although the movie doesn't really pick up until they begin shooting the picture. There are also a lot of jokes towards the filming industry, which the average movie-goer probably won't get. In all, this is one of many comedies that will have come and gone just like that, but this one doesn't have to resort to the sight gags that we've been so accustomed to seeing. Once again, Universal proves their standard releases are still better than other studios' special editions. This isn't one of their famous C.E.'s, yet it still has a 20-minute featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes, and commentary. One surprise is the inclusion of both DTS and Dolby Digital tracks. Of course, this will only concern those with DTS receivers, but the effort from Universal to include both tracks pushes the features rating to 4 stars. Speaking of the audio, it is just fine. Still, studios don't really pay much attention to the audio when they're making a comedy. This is dialogue heavy and it's nicely recorded and very easy to hear. The video contains one of the best anamorphic transfers I have ever seen. Not one speck can be found on this disc. The colors are rich, with deep blacks. In all, a perfect disc in every department.
Overall
This movie isn't knock-down funny, but it's smart and witty. Just the thought of having Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in the same film is cool enough. Heather Graham proves she can be funny, even though she was terrible in AP2. Recommended.
