Film
"Bad Boys" is loud, fast-paced, and most importantly, entertaining. This was Michael Bay's first film. He has since gone on to direct the box-office blockbusters "The Rock" and "Armageddon". Those films share the same traits as this one. Flimsy plot, goofy characters, and tons of action. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play off each other like real-life brothers, bickering most of the time. The script had been under the knife several times and it shows. Block out some of the dialogue, and you just might enjoy yourself.
Features
Columbia has been going back and "updating" some of their previously movie-only editions. They offer up a talky commentary with Michael Bay and a 20-minute featurette on the film. Bay may not be the brainiest director in the biz, but one thing I do like about the guy is he fully supports dvd. Can't wait to hear a commentary for the upcoming "The Rock" Criterion.
Audio
You may want to put in some earplugs before putting this disc in. The 5.1 mix, the same used on the previous release, sounds like you're at a NASCAR event. The bass doesn't let up and the surrounds come in and out almost nonstop. Excellent audio track.
Video
This is also the same 16x9 transfer used on the first release. Clean, crisp, sharp, need I go on? This is a Columbia disc, so you know the quality is flawless.
Overall
It's good to see Columbia updating some of their first batch of releases. I hope other studios start doing the same thing. Not a loaded release, but still way better than what was offered before. Recommended.
