Movie
James Cameron's underwater adventure has alot of eye candy. Brilliant effects aside, the movie has one moral: that humans still have the ability not to destroy each other. I must say if you really want to know what The Abyss is about, you must watch the director's cut. The theatrical leaves out a big chunk of info on the backstories. The added footage really helps the movie make alot of sense.
Disc
I was just blown away by the movie. And I was really blown away by the dvd, given Fox's track record. When they put the effort into it, Fox can make a great dvd. This one is clearly their best effort yet. Let's get to the small problem. Although the packaging claims anamorphic, the dvd is in fact not anamorphic. It's hard to tell, as the video is crystal clear, especially those f/x shots in the water. Those are just beautiful. This is a great movie to show your friends when it comes to video. It is simply outstanding, non-anamorphic aside. There is tad bit of shimmering also. The audio rumbles when it needs to, and stays calm when it needs to. It sports some great surround effects, and the surround really jumps during the water gushing scenes. It's all demo material baby. I saved the features for last because there is a ton of them. They're crammed on the second disc. The documentary is the best of course, but you'll find lots of other stuff hidden. It'll take a few days to get to all of it. There is a text commentary, but not a live one from Cameron. Darn.
Overall
This has been on demand for along time. And now that it's here, I suggest you go get it. This is simply, one of the most complete dvd releases ever. It's not anamorphic, but everything else is excellent. Way to go Fox!
