Motorola & Microsoft In Cable Modem Deal
Ray Van Eng (05/03/96)
For very high speed broadband services, Microsoft is teaming up with Motorola
to develop the next generation of cable modem systems with downstream speed
of up to 30Mbps and upstream at 768 Kbps. The system will incorporate Motorola's
CyberSURF cable modem technology and would run on existing cable systems
using Windows NT & the IIS server software.
Services planned for such broadband networks include videoconferencing, interactive games and advanced multimedia applications. The two companies plan to do more than just building new technologies, they plan to get into co-operative marketing, advertising sales, on-line trade-show exhibits etc.
Motorola is slated to ship more than one million cable modems to various cable companies including Tele-Communications (TCI), Time Warner, and Comcast. These companies will test the equipment during this summer before offering them to cable subscribers. Besides Motorola, Microsoft is also reported to be working with Zenith Network Systems and Cisco Systems Inc. on similar cable modem schemes to provide lightning fast Internet access services.
