At the Internet World trade show in San Diego, Netscape unveiled the latest
version of their Netscape Navigator 3.0 browser that has a myriad of new
features, many of them geared specifically towards the corporate intranet
users.
On the security front, there is the incorporation of a Digital ID for authentication and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 protocol. For site administration, there is a tool kit which would allow a large corporation to preset and lock common operational features such as help menus, directory buttons, email settings, proxy server and even a customizable setup procedure to automate the installation process for all new users.
For real-time collaborative computing, the CoolTalk technology gained from Netscape's acquisition of Insoft, Inc. offers Internet telephony with high quality duplex sound and "whiteboarding" screen sharing with zooming and markup tools.
Improved memory caching performance would also greatly enhance hybrid CD-ROM/On-Line applications by pre-loading CD-ROM content into cache memory for fast access while having the advantage of on-line updating from world wide web servers.
Other new features include interactive electronic mail, threaded discussion groups, Java programming implementation in Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Macintosh and UNIX platforms. Netscape Navigator 3.0 also enables enterprise programmers to develop applications by integrating audio, video, 3D and Internet telephony capabilities.
"Netscape Navigator 3.0 delivers the enhanced encryption, administration, communication and collaboration capabilities that corporate users need, all within a single, easy-to-use environment," said Mike Homer, senior v.p. marketing at Netscape. "With the combination of Netscape Navigator 3.0 and our Netscape SuiteSpot family of servers, Netscape is providing customers with a comprehensive solution for creating enterprise applications based on open, Internet technologies."
A public beta version of Netscape Navigator 3.0 for Windows 3.1 & Windows 95, Macintosh and UNIX operating environments is available immediately for downloading from Netscape www site. http://www.netscape.com
