The U.S. based @Home Network is coming to Canada. They have struck an deal with Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications and will roll out the WAVE @Home service for high speed Internet access to two million Canadian homes by the end of 1997. Rogers and Shaw have already introduced their own WAVE high speed cable Internet service earlier this year. The deal with @Home would allow the two Canadian cable companies to utilize the @Home cable network to link up popular web sites such as CNN, and others who may eventually produce specialized content for the cable Internet market. @Home, Rogers and Shaw may then collect a fee for accessing these contents on behalf of the broadcasters. Currently, Rogers has about 3,000 WAVE subscribers (out
of 300,000 WAVE ready homes) versus 1000 WAVE subscribers for Shaw (out
of 50,000 WAVE ready homes). The WAVE service cost C$55 per month. |
