LIVE PEACE IN TLATELOLCO

The Tlatelolco section of Mexico City has a long story to tell, from its conquest by "Cortez the Killer" in 1521 to the present time. One of the darkest days in Mexican history occurred in the town square on October 2, 1968, when the PRI government sent out its army to disperse of a crowd of student protesters. This they accomplished mostly with gunfire, leaving hundreds of young Mexicans killed, wounded, and otherwise scarred for life in their wake. Fortunately, the members of Los Dug Dug's were in New York City at the time, and missed the horror that unfolded that day.

On November 1, 2003, thirty five years and one month after the massacre at Tlatelolco, Los Dug Dug's led a stellar lineup of classic Mexican rock bands which gathered at Tlatelolco's Preparatoria Popular Fresno to bring some positive energy to this most infamous area of the big city -- "The Great Love and Peace Concert," as it was promoted. Sharing the bill with Los Dug Dug's were Hangar Ambulante, Vibraciones (a local cover band), early 70s Mexican heavy metal legends Enigma, and original Three Souls In My Mind guitarist Ernesto De Leon.

Their weekly residencies in places like La Terraza have generally featured the band playing classic rock covers, but at this show Los Dug Dug's played their own classics! Armando even put the "Dug Dug's Potpourri" greatest-hits medley format to bed this time and led the band in full-length versions of all the songs, making for a solid one-hour set. The staff of EL MUNDO LOCO has heard a tape of the show and the band sounds great. Armando remains Mexican rock's finest electric guitarist after almost four decades in the music business. If you're ever in Mexico City, Los Dug Dug's are definitely still worth checking out live!

Meanwhile, north of the border...

Lalo Garcia, bassist with Los Dug Dug's in the '90s and still living in the Washington D.C. area, has been backing the great Chuck Berry on a semi-regular basis, truly living the American rock and roll dream in the process! So far he's played 15 shows behind Mr. B. Goode. Here's a shot of the Berry-Garcia combo knockin' 'em dead.

Lalo is presently the hardest working Mexican in American show business as a member of no fewer than three other bands, including the one led by blues pianist Daryl Davis. Click on the link below to view an entire live show by the Daryl Davis Group! (RealOne Player required!)

SPECIAL RARE PHOTO SECTION!

Margaret de la Torre Wilkey, ex-wife of original vocalist Jorge de la Torre, sent these extremely rare photos to share with us. Margaret won the coveted title of EL MUNDO LOCO'S Most Valuable Player of 2003 with her magnificent "novela," I MARRIED A DUG DUG!

Jorge sent this shot of himself to Margaret in 1968. Note the "Feb 68" date on the right border! The original photo was in quite a scratched-up state, and took quite a bit of work in Photoshop to correct! The retouching work was specially done for EL MUNDO LOCO by Felipe Maldonado, leader of the very legendary Mexican band Peace and Love, and he did an amazing job. Muchas gracias!

But even more remarkable are the personal handwritten notes from Jorge to Margaret and their two infant children on the back...

The messages read as follows:

"Vieja, I took this picture just for you. We were at El Desierto de los Leones (Mexico's first national park). Love always and you know forever, Jorge."

"Lisa, Georgy: (nonsense squiggles... hey, they were just babes at the time, after all!) Love, Daddy."

Here are Los Dug Dug's hanging out in Durango with Jorge de la Torre's HUGE family. That's Jorge at left, and his mother to the right of him (in the black top).

Thanks so much to Margaret for these photos. Don't forget to check out Margaret's thrilling story of her life with the band!

EL RITUAL was a short-lived but important early 70s Mexican hard rock band with strong ties to Los Dug Dug's. Nearly all of the members of El Ritual were also members of Los Dug Dug's at one time or another. El Ritual released its one and only album on the legendary Raff Records label in 1972 and it has since been reissued on CD. Here's a rare shot of Armando jamming with El Ritual's rhythm section, bassist Chalo Hernandez and drummer Lalo Barcelo, on the campus of Mexico City's National Autonomous University.

Thanks to Manuel Martinez In Mexico City for sharing another one of his incredibly rare photos... many more of which are displayed on his fantastic Black Hole of Mexican Rock site, which you'll find a link to in the list below.
