WMBI

Radio station WMBI in Chicago, flagship station of the Moody Broadcasting Network and the very place where RANGER BILL was brought into existance.

From what I understand, RANGER BILL was produced in Studio B, a large, open studio used for live broadcasts. By the way, Studio B is three floors above the studios used for shows such as Midday Connection and Prime Time America. Studio B still holds the studio pipe organ that was installed in it in 1939 or 1940. That organ probably was the one used to provide the background music for RANGER BILL.

Show Notes

RANGER BILL was produced in the studios of WMBI in Chicago, and according to sources at Moody Tape Ministry, they have show tapes with copyrights from 1954 to 1973.

As you probably already know, Bill Jefferson is chief ranger at the Knotty Pine ranger headquarters. His main sidekicks are Stumpy Jenkins and Gray Wolf. These three musketeers generally have had their own Dartanion as well. There have been several Dartanions - Ralph Carpenter, Ralph Mitchell, Ranger Tom, and Henry Scott.

Bill was described as 40ish, 6 feet tall, dark brown hair, and well built (The Ranger Factory). He was in the Marines and served in the Pacific during WWII (Ben the Dog).

Stumpy is your classic grizzled old prospector type. His pockets are usually stuffed with odds and ends like a pocket knife, string, safety pins, nails, etc. (Tiger Cat). He is also the best shot in the state (Rabies).

Gray Wolf is a Dakota Indian and the son of Chief Black Wolf (The Wispering Cave). He is also the best tracker around (Ben the Dog).

Ralph Carpenter and Henry Scott were the most frequent additions to our trio. Ralph was a young ranger, probably fairly fresh out of the ranger school. Henry was a high school student and held a very special place in Bill's heart. Henry was orphaned as a teen. Bill took Henry as his ward. Henry began volunteering with the rangers and hoped to be a ranger himself someday. Henry held a special place in Bill's heart. Bill often refered to Henry as "Pal". And if I catch the drift of some of the shows, Bill's mom used their home as a boarding house, simply refered to as Mom's.
