WHAT IS NEW VRINDAVAN?

What does "New Vrindavan" mean? Vrinda is the Sanskrit name for the holy tulasi tree and vana means forrest. Vrindavan is a holy place in India, about 90 miles southeast of Delhi. When Lord Krishna, the Supreme Absolute Godhead descended to earth 5000 years ago, He performed many wonderful pastimes in Vrindavan. He is also speaker of Bhagavad Gita, for the benefit of all humanity. Vrindavan has thousands of temples to Lord Krishna, and many pilgrims come to pay homage to the Lord. New Vrindavan is a community in West Virginia, close to Wheeling. It is the oldest, and largest, Hare Krishna community in North America. It was originally founded in August of 1968, when the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, purchased 133 acres of land in the West Virginia hills. Approximatly 30 devotees eventually took up residence there. It was envisioned by Srila Prabhupada, to be modeled after Vrindavan India. New Vrindavan has grown considerably and it is home for many devotees wishing to live a more simpler way of life. It is rich with gardens, lakes, and of course love of God. Festivals are year round, and open to the public. The Temple of Understanding, and Prabhupada's palace, attract many people of all religions who enjoy both the spiritual rewards, and scenic beauty of New Vrindavan.
