Obit "The Cassopolis Vigilant" (Cassopolis, MI) Thursday, 21 Sep 1933
Funeral services were held at Mr. Daniels' late home at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Jos. I. Lindsay, and burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery beside his son, William Daniels, who met his death while on duty as a nightwatch in this village thirty years ago. Mr Daniels was the son of Benjamin H. and Mary Free Daniels and was born at Canandagua, N. Y. , March 27, 1848. He was just under sixteen years of age when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1864 to serve three years in Co. F, 53rd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, but the Civil War closed before his enlistment expired and he was mustered out of the service June 30, 1865. While in the service he was taken prisoner at the battle of Reams Station and served considerable time in a Confederate Prison. After the war he went to Bryan, Ohio, and was there married Sept. 8, 1872 to Miss Alice Oldfield, who survives him, as do also two daughters, Mrs. Ina Knight and Mrs. Carrie Reams, and one grandson William Reams all of this village Of his five brothers and one sister only three survive James Daniels of Los Angeles, and Frank and Willard Daniels of Kalamazoo. Mr. Daniels moved with his family to Cassopolis 47 years ago and had resided here ever since. He had served the village both as Marshall and as Nightwatch, and was always useful and industrious citizen during his active years. In his declining years, he and Mrs. Daniels had made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Jas. Knight, where he received every attention that would make his last days comfortable and happy. The passing of Mr. Daniels leaves only two Civil War veterans in our village, Jefferson Palmer and James H. Byrd.
