| Review for Diesel Boy- Rode Hard and Put Away Wet After what seemed like a short wait, the Boy is finally back. After a bit of a let down with Sofa King Cool, this record takes on where Venus Envy left off. This record is surely not slower stuff(except Warm Beds Cold Winters, and Waltz of the Disappearing Girl), if anything it is getting harder, with songs like Dog On the Tuckerbox and Tangled Up and Blew. The rest is pretty much standard Diesel Boy. Whiny or smooth vocals on Dave's part, melodic guitars (especially at the end of Dog On the Tuckerbox) great bass and drums. I can't really think of anything else to say about this record except I thouroughly enjoy it. Oh, and yes...the lyrics are still the same, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing. I think Stroking My Cat and 65 are freaking hilarious. There is also some poetry located within songs like Big Sparkling New and Pocket Full Of Stars. I didn't particularly like the cover of Alison's Starting to Happen, but hey, that's just me. Anyway, that's enough for now. This gets a well deserved 87/100, Diesel Boy is BACK!!! Best Songs(Dog On the Tuckerbox, Stroking My Cat, and Emo Boy) Review by Dave Norman Review for Diesel Boy- Sofa King Cool Ok. I like Diesel Boy and think they are a good band and all, but after hearing this CD I felt let down. After hearing Venus Envy(their 2nd record) I expected much more from these guys. On many songs they seem to have gotten softer and almost emo-ish. Don't get me wrong, I still like the CD, it's just no where near as good as Venus Envy. I just find this to be an inconsistent CD with some amazing songs, but some shitty songs too. They sound like themselves during songs like A Thousand Cigarettes and Voyeurotica and She's My Queen. But on songs like All About The Abes and A Literary Love Song, they seem to have strayed in a different direction. Scheherazade and the reprise of the same song are just a waste of tracks(in my opinion of course). They seemed to have softened like I said above in songs like Dear John, C'mon and Shining Star(this song kicks ass though) which are really slow and aren't what I'm used to. If you listen to this before you listen to Venus Envy, you'll like it a lot more. I still suggest getting this CD becaues it is still very good, but I hope their new record which is due out later in the year or early next year will be a bit better and get back to their Venus Envy style, which is obviously my kinda music. This CD revieves a well deserved 80/100. Best Songs (A Thousand Cigarettes, Voyeurotica, and Shining Star) Review by Dave Norman CD Review for Diesel Boy- Venus Envy This CD was by far recorded during Diesel Boy's prime. I don't think it is possible to say enough positive things about this album. Amazing lyrics, amazing guitars and bass that are extremely fast at some points and slow but still melodic at other points. There really isn't a bad song on this CD except perhaps Schmooziphisus The Great which doesn't sound like anything else on the album, it's only sub par though. Dave's voice is really cool because he can go from whiny high (Cock Rock) to smooth melodic (Sleepy Soliloquy) easily, and both sound really good. This CD easily surpasses Sofa King Cool and Cock Rock in my books because it is consistent and fast with no crappy experimentation. There is nothing here but straight up Punk Rock, YEAH!!! Listen to the MP3s and you'll understand. This CD gets 94/100, a much better score than Sofa King Cool. Hopefully the new album will be more like this. | Dave's MP3 for Rode Hard...: Stroking My Cat |
Review for Diesel Boy- Sofa King Cool Diesel Boy is one of the most underrated bands around, they have put on a bunch of compilations and still they are not given the respect they deserve. This CD is one of my favorites and is pure entertainment. Diesel Boy does a great job of combining catchy guitars and lyrics with a solid bass line throughout the CD. Every song is fun and there are no let downs. They do a great job of experimenting with different sounds, even using strings for intros. There are no weaknesses that can be heard throughout the entire CD and you want to listen front to back with no interruptions. The lyrics are my favorite part of the CD because they are so clear and fun. Every song has a new theme and each one seems upbeat and positive. Some of the lyrics are so funny that you listen and just start laughing, I think the lyrics are the truest I've ever heard. Diesel Boy is unlike any band I have ever heard they do a great job of combining every aspect of punk music and still there are not given the respect they deserve. Give their mp3s a listen and then go buy the CD because you will not be disappointed, I can promise you that. I give this CD a 92 out of 100. A solid CD from front to back and each song is really well done and thought out. If you like punk and especially songs with good lyrics then you need to get this CD. Review by Mike Case |
