Technical Overview of the Hauppage WinTV-pci and WinCast/TV:

The WinTV PCI is a digital video in-lay board with TV, image and clip capture plus Intercast data or Teletext data reception. A bus-master PCI slot is required, plus a VGA card with DirectDraw 3.0 (or later) and Windows 95. In addition to displaying live video in a window, individual video images and video clips can be digitized and stored to disk.

Live video is digitized from either the built-in 125-channel cable TV tuner or an external video-input source using high quality 4:2:2 video sampling. The digitized video is sent over the PCI bus in your PC into the memory of your VGA display adapter. This allows the digitized video to move efficiently, and takes a fraction of the available bandwidth of the PCI bus.

Your PC’s VGA graphics adapter needs Windows 95 DirectDraw support. VGA cards tested for compatiblity with the WinTV PCI boards are:
  • S3 Trio64V+,Trio32/64, Vision968 and ViRGE
  • Cirrus Logic 5446 and 5464 dual monitor display adapters
  • Matrox Millenium and Mystique
  • Hercules Dynamite 128 (and other ET6000 based VGA cards)
  • ATI Mach64 and Rage II series of graphics display adapters.

Hardware Specifications:

General specifications
Video digitized using YUV 4:2:2 color format at 60 fields per second (50 fps in PAL.) Maximum digitized image size: 640x480 for NTSC video sources, 758x576 for PAL.
Memory segment and interrupts
Requires one interrupt and a memory segment, which are automatically assigned by Windows 95 Plug-and-Play setup. Memory segment can be manually adjusted by the user.
VGA Compatibility
All of the WinTV PCI boards work with most PCI VGA cards in 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 with vertical refresh rates up to 125Hz. Supports color modes up to 16 million colors. The 256 color mode is not recommended, since in this mode the video image is palettized, causing color distortion.
Does not require connections to the VGA card, either internal or external. Requires that the VGA card have an updated DirectDraw driver.
Video Clip Capture
Save continuous video at 320x240 at up to 30 frames per second. (Actual save capability is determined by the speed of the PC and the hard disk drive.) Creates Microsoft Video for Windows compatible AVI files in an uncompressed YUV format.

For use with video conferencing applications such as CU-SeeMe, VDOnet, VocalTec's IPhone, Connectix VideoPhone, Smith Micro's AudioVision, Vivo, etc., the frame rate is set by the video conferencing application and the video format used for digitizing. See chart below for digitizing formats supported and maximum frame rates.
