SMASHING PUMPKINS: Machina II: The Friends and Enemies Of Modern Music (NOTE: this is the full and complete studio album initially intended as the follow-up release to Machina. Virgin records refused to release it. The band then pressed 25 copies of the full album...3 10" EPs and 2 12" LPs...distributed them to friends and told them to spread the music as they saw fit. The following article from CD Now may help shed some light on the situation... The Smashing Pumpkins have turned to the Internet and a team of street-savvy fans to distribute and promote their final work, Machina II -- The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music. Twenty-five copies of the album -- a double LP with three 10-inch EPs on hand-cut, hand-numbered, non-lacquered acetate -- were shipped to 25 lucky Pumpkins fans with instructions to distribute and distribute quickly. As a result, the album has been quickly digitized and is now available entirely on the Internet and various other means of bootlegging. For information on how to get the album, check out machina2.cjb.net. The 25-song album contains several brand new Pumpkins tracks as well as alternate versions and outtakes from the MACHINA/The Machines of God sessions. According to the marketers behind the album, all heavily involved in the Smashing Pumpkins online community and who bombarded the press with numerous emails about the release over the weekend, the unconventional release was necessary due to Virgin Records' refusal to release the album commercially.)
