RESPONSE TO QUESTION ABOUT MILLING POLY HEADS TO INCREASE COMPRESSION RATIO Bob, Please note, all this is from memory. I may be a little off on some of the specs. The heads have a lot of meat on them, and take a shave really well, and don’t require notching the cast pistons(using the .455 lift/duration cam). Due to TRW trying to help me (yea, right) by dishing out those cast pistons, and with the heads shaved .060, and using a steel shim head gasket, I figure my CR to be 8.77:1. The stock Poly combustion chambers are bigger than open chamber B/RB heads, to the tune of 89cc (if I remember right) When doing all this, there are a few things to consider. Ma Mopar lied about the CR on ALL of her engines, the 318 Poly was closer to 7.5:1 CR when new. She also lied about HP and TQ ratings, no wonder all the brand X owners were left behind scratching their heads. Mopar has always made more HP/TQ on less CR than the others. The heads are the weak link on Poly engines.* Better valve springs (360 E-58 engine) are a good choice. A little porting and polishing buys a lot of flow improvement. Easy on the porting, limit it to removing casting flash and gasket matching. You really win on the polishing department. A three angle valve job almost all shops do this without even being told to, they are set up for it.(still request a 3 angle with a 70. Plunge cut.)
