Apart
from the use of the series' most popular monsters, this "Kids
Club" mode is pretty much unrelated to the rest of the game.
Kids Club doesn't interface with the Game Boy titles and the
games are more akind to the mini-games in Mario Party than
to the one-on-one battles in Pokémon Stadium. The game features
nine mini-game contests. Up to four players can go head-to-head,
but computer players will fill in if not enough human players
are present. There are three different difficulty levels for
the computer drones, ranging from easy to very hard.
Magikarp's
Splash Starring: Magikarp (#129) Magikarp's Splash is definitely
the weirdest of all nine mini-games. Since Magicarp is literally
a fish out of water in this contest, player control is limited
to jumping. Not too complicated, is it? Just press your A
Button and Magicarp jumps up, hitting the bell at the top
of the screen. This counts as one point. The player with the
most points at the end of the time limit wins. The key to
winning is of course finding the perfect rhythm. Press your
button too quickly and Magicarp won't complete his jump and
fall back to the ground without hitting the bell.
Clefairy Says Starring: Clefairy (#35) Ever feel like hitting
Clefairy over the head with a hammer? Here's your chance.
Actually, the idea is NOT to get hit on the head with the
hammer... But who could resist this temptation? The objective
of this school-themed mini-game is to remember a series of
directional commands and then enter them with the D-Pad within
a certain time limit. It's just like "Simon Says". Only that
you get hit on the head and lose energy for every wrong command.
It's very funny to look at. If you're playing against the
computer, you can always cheat and use pen and paper to write
down Clefairy's directions.
Run
Rattata Run Starring: Rattata (#19) This one's vintage Mario
Party material. Four Rattatas are displaying hamster-like
tendencies by running on a treadmill. Rapidly tap the A Button
to run, Decathlon-style, then hit B to jump over hurdles.
The player with the most mileage wins.
Snore
War Starring: Drowzee (#96) It's the ultimate Drowzee face-off
-- but like with Magicarp's contest, things are pretty peaceful.
The objective is, not surprisingly, to put the other players
to sleep. The setup sounds like the beginning of a joke: four
Drowzees are standing in a circle. A pendulum swings between
them. Each player now has to hit their A Button at the exact
moment the pendulum passes the middle point. If you're off,
it changes direction ever so slightly and your Drowzee gets
more sleepy each time the pendulum passes. The last Drowzee
left standing wins. Your best bet is to stare straight at
the middle of the screen and hit the button whenever you see
the pendulum approach. Don't pay any attention to the Drowzees,
they're just there to confuse you...
Thundering
Dynamo Starring: Pikachu (#25), Voltorb (#100) Now this one's
fun. Four electric Pokémon (it's randomly determined whether
they're Voltorbs or Pikachus) face off in front of a giant
electric apparatus. The idea is to rapidly tap your green
and blue (A and B) buttons on your controller to build up
electricity. The catch is that you have to watch the color
of the light on the machine as it changes between blue and
green. If it's blue, pressing A increases your electricity
bar at the bottom of the screen. If you mistakenly tap B while
the light is blue, it decreases. The Pokémon to first fill
its bar completely will unleash a high-voltage shock that
causes the machine to electrocute the other three Pokémon.
It's all about concentration.
Sushi
Go-Round Starring: Lickitung (#108) Sushi Go-Round requires
the most control from the player. Using the analog stick,
each player maneuvers his/her Lickitung around a Kaiten-Sushi
restaurant where sushi is served on a circular conveyer belt.
Press a button and Lickitung sticks out its huge tongue, ready
to suck in any food that comes close. The goal is simple:
Eat as much sushi as possible and don't scorch your tongue
on hot wasabi (although Lickitung's animation when it burns
its mouth may be too funny to resist...). Note that eating
the same type of sushi in a row gives you bonus points --
so always look out for chains of similar sushi types.
Ekans'
Hoop Hurl Starring: Ekans (#23), Diglett (#50) While Sushi
Go-Round may feature actual 3D control, Ekans' Hoop Hurl is
the mini-game that requires the most technique and skill from
the player. It's basically a variation on Whack-a-Mole. Digletts
randomly stick their heads out of nine holes on a playfield
decorated with Dugtrio drawings. In order to score a point,
you have to catapult an Ekans onto the field right on top
of a Diglett -- before it disappears. You determine the direction
of the toss by pushing left and right, then you pull back
the analog stick like a sling shot and let go.
Rock
Harder Starring: Metapod (#11), Kakuna (#14) As the name suggests,
Rock Harder revolves around Pokémon's defense-building "harden"
technique. Players control everyone's favorite cocoon Pokémon,
Kakuna and Metapod -- well, actually -- control isn't really
the right word... Press your button and your Pokémon uses
"harden" and turns to metal. Let go of the button and it turns
back to normal. The move makes you invincible but it uses
up energy (which is displayed at the bottom of the screen).
The idea is to press the button just at the right time when
giant rocks threaten to fall on the unfortunate Pokémon. If
you're not invincible when a rock hits you, you lose even
more energy. Accurate timing is required, otherwise you'll
use up your energy before your opponents... Tip: Don't look
at the rocks -- look at the shadow on the ground!
Dig!
Dig! Dig! Starring: Sandshrew (#27) Dig! Dig! Dig! Isn't the
most inspired mini-game in Pokémon Stadium, but it's nevertheless
a fun little diversion. Four Sandshrews compete to dig for
water in the fastest possible time. Yep, you guessed it. It's
all about button mashing again. Just hammer your fingers down
on your poor controller and make your Sandshrew dig faster
than your opponents'. The one to first reach the ground water
level takes home the prize (and comes flying out of the hole
on top of a water fountain).
Secret:
Hyper CPU Difficulty To unlock this hidden difficulty setting,
select a single-player game against three CPU-controlled opponents.
You need to win the "Who's the Best?" challenge five times
in a row on HARD difficulty. This will open up the new HYPER
difficulty setting for the CPU players.
