Yesterday, Pittsburgh TV News received an email from a representative from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette stating that we were in violation of International Copyright Law and asked that we remove their stories from our website. The following email is in it's original form except we took out a name because we do not want to publicize that person.
Pittsburgh TV News has removed the stories from our website. In finding out what went wrong, we realized that we have not linked any of our pages to our copyright disclaimer which justifies us putting their stories on our site. We have since added that. We are removing the stories in protest. Our copyright disclaimer justifies our right to put the stories on our website. We are not stealing the stories. We are not taking credit for them. Also until further notice, Pittsburgh TV News is also suspending all material or linking to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette until further notice. We regret any inconvenience as a result of this. We contacted the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this morning and they said that we can not do this at all saying that they tell America On-Line the same thing. We are simply trying to build a database of information where people in the Pittsburgh Area and around the country can find out what is going on at their favorite station in Pittsburgh. We are not building a brand name on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, we are rather building a brand name on the basis of people who have an interest in television news. We are also building a brand name on our original content such as column and any original news tips that we receive. We regret not giving you the information, but it is unclear at this point on what the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wants us to do as to our linking to them and we will not be able to find out until next week. NEWSWATCH UPDATE (2/9/2001) Unfortunately, we haven't had the time to contact the person that Ms. Alward told us we can talk to but we will as soon as time permits. We have to figure out they will allow us to do legally. We are a not-for-profit website that is a shrine to what many people count on everyday. We will not be bullied by anyone , but at the same time, we do not want to inconvenience any one. Keep heart, the news will continue no matter what.
